Chapter 10

Her hands reached up and gripped his wrist. “What are you doing?”

“Am I wasting my time, Detective?” he asked her harshly. With a disgusted sigh, he released her and pushed away from his desk, going straight to the liquor cabinet recessed into the wall and pouring himself a generous amount of scotch, putting the glass to his mouth and almost emptying the entire content.

“Go home,” he told her wearily.

“No.”

“What the hell do you want from me?”

She got up from her perch and walked towards him. “To answer your damn question, I cannot believe you really asked me if you are wasting your time!”

“That does not answer the question, Detective.” His stormy grey eyes wandered over her tousled hair and the wrinkled shirt with his fingers still marked out on the material.

“I should not have to answer a question like that!” she snapped as she dug her fingers through her hair. “I love you! You twist me up inside and I cannot live without you. Judge for yourself how much time you are wasting. Do you want out, Justin?”

“What?”

“I am a big girl, Justin, I can take it. I am not those weak-willed socialites who you are used to going out with. I am a strong woman. If you want out, just say it.”

He almost smiled at her disparaging comments about the women in his society. “You think I want out? Do you know me at all, Detective?”

She went over to him and took the glass out of his hand, putting it on the table next to them. “I might not share some of the things at work with you and I am sorry that I worried you and pissed you off because I tend not to do that, but it has nothing to do with what I feel about you. I love you, Justin, and it is something that I have never told a man before. I hate it when you get all cold and shut me out, damn you.”

He pulled her into the circle of his arms and cradled her in his arms, his face buried in her thick hair. “I was paralyzed when I listened the news.” His hands trembled slightly as he held her. “I thought of you out there and agonized over what could have happened to you and I went rigid with fear and anger. I cannot stop you or tell you what to do regarding your work, Kiara, but it does not stop me from feeling fear.” He shifted so that he could tilt her chin up. “You asked me if I want out.” He smiled a little grimly. “I would not have the slightest idea how to stay away from you, darling. You have me twisted up inside as well and I cannot be without you.”

She wrapped her hands around his neck. “How about showing me what I really mean to you on top of that shiny desk of yours?” she asked huskily.

“With pleasure.”

“I am having lunch with your mother,” she muttered as she stared at herself in the mirror.
